We consider, for example, the classic anthropological concept of purity and danger (e.g.
Douglas, 1966) to be central to understanding both the current situation and long-term
trajectories regarding dominant policy trends in drylands. Mary Douglas argued that rituals of 200560000016 200560101015

maintenance of unifying categories used to classify, conceptualise and construct ‘reality’.

sources of disorder thus becomes ‘… a positive effort to organise the environment’. This
organisation is carried out by ‘… separating, purifying, demarcating and punishing
transgressions’, acts which are made possible ‘by exaggerating the difference between within
and without’ so as ‘to impose system on an inherently untidy experience’ (Douglas, 1966, p2,
4). We extend these ideas in considering the ways in which socio-political processes of 200560000016 200560101015
purification – of knowledges, peoples, spaces, and practices – have structured encounters with
modernity for drylands and their inhabitants. We argue that this has manifested as the exclusion
of phenomena that run counter to the normative frame of reference of a powerful, colonizing
and globalizing culture of modernity; a zeitgeist that is maintained today, in various ways,
under the current modernizing ‘culture complex’ of neoliberalism (Hannerz 2007).
Three interrelated dimensions in particular constrain understanding of contexts positioned as
peripheral to this culture. First, the reduction of complex and diverse phenomena to bounded
and reified categories, i.e. that act as homogenizing reference points, transferable across time
and space (Latour, 1987; Smith, 2001). Second, the construction of a rationalist and positivist
