However, “absolute synchronism” is needed to prevent slippage, which can not be achieved.
In practice, the speed of the strip can only be estimated to an accuracy of approximately 2-10%.
The auxiliary drive strategy is to model the friction torque and acceleration torque, and use a A402KC
motor connected to the roll to create a compensating torque which is the instantaneous sum of
these torques.When the roll is not in contact with the strip in certain circumstances (drag torque = 0), it is not
possible to use only torque regulation.
The use of only torque regulation can give large speed errors.
By adding a “dead band” to the speed regulation, a small speed error results in a limited torque
increment within the “dead band” (less than the smallest drag torque), and a large speed error A402KC
results in a large torque.
This is done to restore the roll speed quickly to almost synchronous speed, to minimize slippage
between the roll and the strip at the instant of contact.
From what has been described, both speed regulation and torque regulation is required.
Since normal motor control contains both these regulators, all that is needed is an enhancement
to them to solve the problem of regulation.
The Figure 1-5 shows a typical motor operation.The errors which can’t be corrected must be covered by the “dead band” control.You can verify that the magnitude of the “dead band” is sufficient by connecting A402KC
the relay output No. 3 to show “Indeadband” 14.09 = 311 and 14.10 = bit 0,
then look at the ACTual PARameter 1.21 “RO3-1 Status” on the hand unit.
This shows a value 0 when operation is inside the “dead band” (It is easier to verify this,
if a LED is connected to the output due to the delay in up-dating of the hand unit display).
When operation goes outside the “dead band”, the motor can work with max/min torque,
which ultimately leads to motor or braking resistor tripping by the thermal overload A402KC
protection.
The risk of strip slippage on the Measuring Roll is of course great when operation goes
outside the “dead band”.
