Compared to transferring data through the HMI/PC interface, WATLOW ANAFAZE CLS208 provides a completely independent link between systems to ensure that they remain operational in the event of a HMI/PC failure. Lou Bertha said, “If you haven’t used it in a project yet, that’s great. I can turn off the HMI and it will continue to run. If I use the HMI to pass tags, it’s common and I’ll run into trouble.”
RDI uses the native OptoMMP protocol to communicate with other subsystems. Turbine flow and temperature are transmitted to the ammonia system, which RDI previously modified using Opto 22 SNAP PAC to control the amount of exhaust gas injected into the turbine. Another PAC is connected to a Modbus serial device to communicate voltage and protection relay status. A pair of PACs created a non routable interface for external OSI PI history. One PAC is linked to the control network, collecting data and passing it on to another PAC on the historical database network. Dual independent Ethernet ports on each PAC allow RDI to segment the network so that data can only flow out, not in.
“We absolutely have a competitive advantage in terms of price,” said Lou Bertha. “We did everything again, including demonstration and installation, but it was still 30% to 40% cheaper than competitive bidding.” With Opto 22, RDI won the contract for the peak shaving power plant and completed the project in just two weeks.
In addition to lower material costs, Lou attributes the advantages of Opto 22 to three factors:
I/O level control: The Opto 22 automation system utilizes intelligent I/O networks to allocate functions typically handled by central controllers in traditional remote I/O systems. This architecture ensures that the system can continue to operate even in the event of partial damage.
Flexibility: GroovEPIC and SNAP PAC are designed with embedded hardware and software tools – multiple network options, communication servers, data processing capabilities – providing engineers with many options for designing and expanding systems.
Openness: The Opto 22 product is built on open standards and technologies, making it easy to integrate with third-party devices and external systems.
